Design Principles Weekly Exercise 4 : Harmony, Unity & Proportion.
Design Principles Weekly Exercise 4 : Harmony, Unity & Proportion.
๐ LECTURE
This week, we learned about harmony, unity and an extra information as usual, which is proportion. Harmony and unity work hand in hand together. From the lecture, harmony means putting in elements that have common traits. Based on my understanding, it means looking at a design without feeling something jumping out like how contrast works. For an example, using similar colours, lines and shapes. Next, unity can be achieved when the elements are placed and composed in a balanced way that give a sense of oneness. The key word for unity is "oneness"
For proportion, it means placing two or more elements and how they compare with one another in a design. Based on my understanding, the "comparison" can be achieved through the size of the elements. It can be quite tricky as it might be not balance with the comparison of size or quantity. However, if using and placing the elements effectively, harmony and unity can be achieved.
In order to strengthen my understanding, I explored Pinterest to look at different designs, and questioned my self why I feel it is harmony and unity. I found a design that I liked it really much, which also able to show harmony and unity...and also proportion!
Figure 1.1: Sweet Dreams
From figure 1.1, harmony and unity is achieved by the similarity in implementing the colours, organic shapes and lines. Proportion is included, with the small character in comparison with the huge "sleeping beauty", yet overall the entire design is harmonious.

๐ฌ EXERCISE 4
For this week, we have to create 2 designs, for harmony and unity. The materials that we are going to use is either poster colours or acrylic. Straight to the point, I am going to use poster colours.
This week is a little bit tricky as for the design principles, harmony and unity are usually working together in a design. It is kind of hard to "differentiate" clearly between two principles in a design. This makes me a little bit confused in thinking of designs that can be align, and portray the principle.
As usual, let me just explore the internet as for visual research. At the same time, to be more aware look of my surroundings, and from my daily experiences, in order to get some inspirations.
Thanks to the algorithms AGAIN, Pinterest's homepage came out with designs and artworks that are related to my previous weeks' exercises. On top of it, definitely, dancers' portraits as shown below:
Figure 2.1: Dancer Illustration by Mathilde Crรฉtier( https://www.pinterest.com/pin/136726538677291260/ )
Figure 2.2: Dancer illustration by Mathilde Crรฉtier
( https://www.pinterest.com/pin/136726538677291261/ )
Both of the dancer illustrations by this illustrator named Mathilde Crรฉtier shown harmony, with the affective application of colours and lines. Personally, I like how the analogous colours and similarity of lines are applied. The entire design are harmony yet not monotony with its variety. Windfall! I found this Paris illustrator's e-portfolio and Instagram account: http://www.mathildecretier.com/ https://www.instagram.com/mathildecretier/?hl=fr !!! Followed and saved because I really like her designs.
Then, I start to think what I want to draw. To be honest, empty brain as usual, at the same time with my anxiety and stress from assignments' deadlines. No worries, not totally from this module and I'm not blaming because force(stress) forces growth. Well, but it still leads to sleepless nights and stress eating. I remember on Sunday night, I can't sleep in my bed yet telling myself I need to rest and sleep in order to get productive on the next days. From that, I opened my laptop and typed on my desktop sticky notes: sleepless night, stress, tension. You must be wondering why I'm doing that.
2 reasons:1) throwing in my thoughts as ideas out from my brain in order to sleep well,2) daily experiences can be ideas for design principles weekly exercises.
Kay~ Yes, this is me :) I won't tell you (definitely going to tell you) that recently I feel my overthinking and "negative" experiences contribute a lot to my designs as ideas. HAHA. Isn't it fun and soothing? Yes it is. Okay back to the topic. So, after a not so high quality sleep, I start my 1st draft in the morning as below:
Figure 3.1: My 1st draft for Harmony and Unity
Feedback 1:
During tutorial, Dr. Jinchi provided me feedbacks suggesting that the top 2nd draft is very suitable for Harmony. However, the moon can be in circular shape and its best to add on clouds in surrounding to achieve harmony. Besides, the top 3rd draft is actually good to go for unity to shown as "one"
For the drafts in bottom, I mentioned my stories behind designing them, one with the relationship food which turns out to be "stop overthinking", and the another one is about unsettle for the past. Dr. Jinchi advised me to think of more possible different view from the 2nd one (unsettle for past), maybe back or top view, and I can actually make the hair at the end looks like fragile to represent past. For the 1st one (food), she advised me maybe I can work on with brain instead of hair.
Throughout this session, I got clearer to differentiate in between harmony and unity, Having said that, I then progressed to come out with my 2nd draft as below:
With this 2nd draft, I got more ideas which are all progressed from the "unsettled from the past". As usual, my overthinking contributed me a lot of ideas, but at the same time they all looks like running out from the theme - Unity. I tried to incorporate Unity onto the last draft (bottom right end) by making similar organic shapes.
Feedback 2:For harmony, the yellow one is good to go. As for unity, try the flower on idea no. 3, replacing the coconut tree because I think the coconut tree might be distracting.
With the feedbacks provided, I hence proceeded to sketch on A4 papers. Regarding to the idea no.3, I decided to just remove the coconut tree and just remain it as sand. My final idea to make idea no.3 to be Unity is to play around with curves and colours.
Figure 4.2: Painting with poster colours for Harmony
Figure 4.3: Painting with poster colours for Harmony
I 1st completed Harmony, with satisfaction. Here's something interesting happened for Unity. Eventually, I proceed to paint for unity as in the sketches on Figure 4.1. Here's what came out:
Figure 4.4: A fail outcome for Unity
...I don't like how it came out. Most importantly, the green was too attractive, and during the process, I thought maybe I can use all the colours to "balance" everything, so I included red too. ๐ฐ Then it turned out like that... definitely, not really can be stated as "Unity".
With the limited time left, I then proceeded to the one which I agreed it is very "Unity". My thought at that point was: Well, I do not want to produce a design that do not fit the theme "Unity". But I don't have much time left... hey, it's okay, just do what I can do. At least from here, you can identify it do not really suits "Unity", and it's not strong enough to say it is unity. Most importantly, now you understand Unity better. Right? Move on.

๐ REFLECTION OF THE WEEK
This week, harmony and unity started with a lot of uncertainties and unsure. Throughout the process, I got to figure out clearer about both of the principles, especially for unity. Here to explain something...I know, I could re-attempt Unity with the same draft, but with other colours, it might work. I have to be really honest over here, I admit I did it for to sake to finish it. I am willing to take the challenge to re-attempt the same draft again, but not this time because I can't afford the time needed to try. I had to make the decision, so here's the safest decision I made. Sorry but not too sorry to myself...it is okay because I know sometimes, finishing it is the priority.
Enough of all the negativities you just read, on the other hand, I am actually really satisfied with how Harmony came out. Not to mention the principle "harmony" shown in this final outcome, the entire piece makes me feel harmony too. Feeling so peaceful and calm looking at it, especially with the tones of blue. Guess I am able to rest better and sleep well after looking at it.
Nope, not the best that I know I can do...but definitely my best in terms of putting in my maximum effort, and balancing out different modules, and balancing out my study-life. Side note, I really appreciate how Dr. Jinchi's effort in replying my messages even outside from live tutorials (also because recently I interviewed some lecturers about their struggles in online teaching, I got to know how their working hours extended...) ... who knows these topics: perfectionism, work-life balance, online teaching & learning... MIGHT be my inspirations for next week's tutorial?
Thanks to Dr. Jinchi...and also my dearest me, for everything for this week ๐
